SELF TALK

Have you realized that most of your unhappiness in life is due to the fact that you are listening to yourself instead of talking to yourself?

Martyn Lloyd Jones

No, it’s not the first sign of madness but a healthy way to offload, and not just on Time to Talk Day

In recent months, feelings of sadness, frustration, grief. powerlessness and fear have become common to us all. They swirl around our heads like invaders.

These feelings accumulate and however positive and upbeat you try to be, they creep in as we live in this pandemic world. Most of us hesitate to tell others how we feel – who wants to listen to someone moaning?

Telling yourself to “pull yourself together” is a waste of breath because of the plethora of negativity, which  leaves us vulnerable and miserable. It is very easy to slide down that spiral as negativity becomes a pattern, especially if you are on your own.

  • Agree with a friend to have a joint Moaning Monday or Sad Sunday where you just share to each other on the phone
  • Write down your feelings – offload each night before sleep. No-one is going to see it so it doesn’t matter how trivial it seems.
  • If you can’t be bothered to write, talk to a pet or teddy bear.
  • Record your feelings on your phone – you can delete when ready.
  • Go outside and talk to the Universe, a tree, the stars or God.

You will sleep better and feel better, after all tomorrow is another day with plenty more challenges. Tell yourself what you are grateful for each day and your mind will accept positive thoughts and eventually these will conquer the negative ones.
